CIVIL
PARTNERSHIPS
Effective from 1 December 2005 was groundbreaking legislation for
same-sex partners, who can now form a civil partnership ending only
on death or Court Order. The legislation is almost the same as the
present divorce laws and means that same-sex couples will make a
commitment to each other which is supported by legal rights and
responsibilities. At the end of that relationship, claims can be
made as in divorce, to include property, pension and other money
claims. These will be recognised in around a dozen countries in
both Europe and North America and it will be the first time that
such arrangements have been possible in this country. Another interesting
change includes the ability for a step-parent to acquire Parental
Responsibility for their partner's child, either by agreement or
Court Order.
